Restaurants in Tournus: haute Burgundian cuisine and Romanesque heritage
Tournus, a small Burgundian town nestled between Mâcon and Chalon-sur-Saône, is one of France's most acclaimed gastronomic destinations for its size. Five Michelin-starred restaurants within a five-minute walk: Aux Terrasses (1 star), Greuze (1 star, tribute to the local painter Jean-Baptiste Greuze), Quartier Gourmand (1 star), Le Rempart, and Le Meulien nearby. This unique phenomenon has earned Tournus the nickname 'the town of five stars'. All celebrate the iconic local produce: Bresse chicken PDO, Burgundy snails, Charolais beef, aged cheeses (époisses, Mâconnais), and wines from the neighbouring Côte chalonnaise and Mâconnais.
But Tournus is not just about its starred tables. Around the Saint-Philibert Abbey Church (a Romanesque jewel of Burgundy and listed monument), traditional bistros, quayside brasseries and market-cuisine tables make up an accessible culinary scene. On the Saône quays, shaded terraces fill up in summer. Italian cuisine, artisanal pizzerias and world cuisine are also represented, especially around Place de l'Hôtel-de-Ville and Rue de la République.
To plan your visit: peak season runs April to October, with a peak in July-August. Starred restaurants are often fully booked 2 to 4 weeks ahead at weekends; midweek, 7 to 10 days is enough. Weekly closures cluster on Sunday evening, Monday and Tuesday lunch.
